Weddings are a big time and financial investment. The last thing you want to deal with on your wedding day is unexpected additional costs, or worse, the financial burden of cancelling your wedding. Having insurance can help protect you if something were to go wrong, which is why we always recommend it.

In this article, we’ll discuss all the reasons we recommend insuring your wedding, what wedding insurance covers, what it doesn’t, and how much it can cost.

What Is Wedding Insurance, And Who Needs It?

Let’s start off by setting something straight. Wedding insurance itself isn’t a specific product— you would purchase Special Events Liability insurance for your wedding which provides coverage for Commercial General Liability, i.e. third-party bodily injury and property damage that could occur at any event.

This type of coverage is available for a number of private or public events including weddings, festivals, fundraisers, baby showers, anniversary parties, etc. Liability limits are usually available for up to $5,000,000 and can accommodate a maximum of 10,000 attendees and five days in length.

Insuring a big event like your wedding protects you from losses around your wedding day caused by unforeseen circumstances. These can include things like weather, issues with the venue or one of your vendors, or other situations that could stop your wedding from happening altogether.

This type of insurance will also give you peace of mind in those critical days leading up to, and on, your wedding day.

So to answer our own question, we think everyone needs and can benefit from wedding insurance.

What Does Wedding Insurance Cover, And How Does It Work?

Whether you’re hosting your wedding in your home province of Manitoba, travelling to an exotic destination, or planning on jet-setting for your honeymoon, there’s an insurance policy that will help you plan for the unexpected bumps and hiccups that may come your way.

Hosting Your Wedding In Manitoba?

Planning on having your special day in a place that’s near and dear to your heart? Right at home. We outlined a few types of coverage you may want to consider before you head down the aisle and say, I do.

Coverage For Event Liability

The key purpose of coverage for event liability is to cover bodily injury and venue damage if any were to occur.

When it comes to this type of coverage, you may want to talk to your venue. Some venues offer this coverage as part of your rental, others will most likely require you to get it in order to host your big day at their facility.

Liquor Liability coverage is also something you should ask your venue about. Many wedding venues require couples to obtain this for their wedding if it hasn’t already been provided by the venue themselves.

As the event host– you are responsible for the protection and safety of the attendees and the property.

Coverage For Wedding Gifts

Coverage for gifts is something that you may want but is not necessary. It offers you and your partner financial protection by covering any direct physical loss of or damage to wedding presents (24 hours prior to and after the wedding). This includes while the property is at your home, the reception location, or in transit between the two.

Coverage For Suppliers

Coverage for suppliers would cover you if a supplier decided not to show and you needed to pay for a last-minute replacement service. Last-minute services, such as a last-minute wedding dress fix, can usually run you double to triple a normal service cost.

It’s worth mentioning that although this coverage exists and can be helpful, it tends to be limited in nature and comes with exclusions. The best way to find out if this coverage is right for you is to talk to one of our Insurance Consultants today!

Coverage For Wedding Cancellations

The last thing you want to think about when pouring hours and hours into planning a wedding is not being able to have it due to unforeseen circumstances. A wedding can be called off for a number of reasons including, vendor illness, extreme weather, and damage to your venue, to name a few.

This coverage offers reimbursement of deposits paid or contracted to be paid because of unexpected cancellation of the wedding. Note that this will not cover you in the case of a change of heart.

Although you never need to purchase wedding cancellation coverage, it can save a whole lot of headaches before your big day.

Planning A Destination Wedding?

Depending on where in the world you are having your big day can change the type of coverage you may want to purchase. In some countries, getting food poisoning before your wedding or having to cancel due to extreme weather may be more likely. This is why we strongly recommend you look into where you plan to get married and talk to companies around there. They will know best what coverage may be more beneficial and what your insurance options even are.

Going On A Honeymoon?

It can be easy to forget about your honeymoon when all your focus is on your wedding day. For that reason, it’s important you are protected in the case anything goes wrong.

How Much Does Wedding Insurance Cost?

Wedding Insurance packages range from $200 – $1,000. The cost of the package depends on things like the coverage limits, deductibles, and the package you choose.

The type of coverage you pick will not only determine the cost of your coverage but what things your policy will cover and how much you’ll have to pay out of pocket if something does occur.

When Should You Buy Insurance For Your Wedding?

You spend a lot of money and time making your day perfect. It’s important to make sure it’s protected with the right coverage. We get it; buying an insurance policy for your wedding may not be part of the wedding journey you pictured as a little kid. However, it’s still an important step in the planning process.

When it comes to purchasing coverage, some policies will let you buy insurance up to a year in advance, all the way to a couple of days before. We recommend starting to talk to an Insurance Consultant as soon as possible so that you have time to search around and find the best plan for your needs.

The sooner you purchase coverage, the sooner the things you start putting money into can be covered. You can get coverage to include events surrounding your wedding as well, such as a rehearsal dinner or a shower for the bride or groom.

FAQs About Wedding Insurance

You’ve got the rings, we’ve got the answers to your questions!

Yes you do. Talk to your venue to make sure you get exactly what is needed for their space.

It protects you in the unfortunate situation your wedding needs to be postponed or cancelled.

This can cover you in situations such as an unexpected illness, vendor issues, or extreme weather. It’s important to make yourself aware of the restrictions and exclusions your policy may have before you buy it. This will help you know what you’re entitled to if something does go wrong, and make sure the policy you plan on getting actually suits your big day.

It depends. Most wedding insurance no longer offers cancellations due to Covid-19 as restrictions have loosened.

Once again, be sure to read your policy carefully and ask questions before you make the decision to buy. There usually are exclusions to every policy, so make yourself familiar with yours. The rule of thumb here is that wedding insurance mostly covers things outside a couple’s control (extreme weather, some illness..). It does not cover things within a couple's control such as a change of heart.
